Meffan Winter Show

Sometimes paintings seem to come out of nowhere. I was happily playing with colours textures and shapes in a big shed. Came back to them after a day and broke them into areas with clearly defined thick black lines.

​Low and behold there was a bird of prey giving me the eye in one of them and all kinds of harbour machinery in the other - to my mind anyway.

Memories of my daily walk to the fishing village of Gourdon in 2020 dictated the way the painting developed. As for the bird, well, having watched Why Not Scotland? about rewilding and a programme about Egyptian vultures re-colonising, left some residue of images in my mind's eye giving rise to the painting Wilding.

At the same time I was looking at a book about one of my favourite painters, Peter Lanyon, so that was probably working on my mind too.

They are on show from 9 November until 6 January 2025 in Forfar and hope they find a new home.
